Lifehouse | Smoke & Mirrors

Lifehouse is an alternative rock band started in 1999 and most famous for their single “Hanging By A Moment” which topped the charts in 2001 and still gets radio play. The lineup consists of Jason Wade (vocals/guitar), Bryce Soderberg (bass), Ben Carey (guitar) and Rick Woolstenhulme (drums). Although going through a lineup change, since their start the band has released five studio albums and spawned 11 radio singles, the most notable, “Hanging By A Moment,” “Spin” and “You and Me.” In March 2010, the band has released their most current piece of work, Smoke & Mirrors.

“Halfway Gone” is the first and only single so far that was released to radio stations last October to begin it’s slow climb up the radio charts, peaking at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Top 40. This is a catchy song and a great way to let fans know that they are back with new music! I was not sure how the rest of the CD would turn out because about half of their songs I like and the other half I’m not as crazy about, most being slow ballads. The song opens “wooh-ooh-oohs” and leads into an upbeat tempo with Jason singing a mellow versus, by the chorus the song explodes into a full on rock song which will more than likely cause you to bob your head.

As a whole, the CD is more rock than past albums which feature love ballads favored by girls. The first four songs lead you to question if this is going to be an all rock album. Track 5, It Is What It Is, is probably my favorite of the four slower paced songs. If you are a Lifehouse fan and into the ballads this may dissappoint you some as there are not as many as on previous CDs. I personally liked the majority of the CD, and is probably my favorite of all their releases. Not something I would listen to all the time, but on occasion. Despite the rock vibe in all the songs, there is something about Wade’s voice that leaves you feeling relaxed and wanting more…is this why ladies love him?

Since it’s March 2nd release, Lifehouse has started touring again, most recently with Daughtry and Cavo. The three month tour that crosses across the U.S. and into Canada does not hit Oklahoma but makes a stop in Kansas City on May 25th. By the end of the year I can almost bet that they will make a stop at the Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, where I have seen them twice before.

I’m not big on their softer songs neither. But this defiantly made me want to give this cd a try! I listened to some of the songs just now and i like ”falling in” the most! 🙂 that’d be cool if i got to see them at Cain’s

I like the sound of Halfway Gone (the song you posted with the video) however, the video itself looks like a car commercial…strange. I would love to check out this new CD and would also enjoy seeing them live (at Cain’s perhaps?). Would like to see if his voice is as soulful in person as it is on his CD.
